The pandemic has had a dramatic impact on employment. Businesses are struggling to adapt to a workforce that is increasingly working remotely, a downturned economy, and offices that need to be reconfigured to meet CDC safety guidelines. In addition, there is a renewed focus on anti-discrimination practices in the workplace. Job seekers are numerous; many have found themselves laid off or furloughed. The attitudes and priorities of job seekers have shifted. Most now prioritize safety, stability, and compensation above all else. They also seek a company with culture and values that align with their own. For those businesses lucky enough to be in a position where hiring is needed, there are several hiring trends to consider.
Hiring Trends:
1. Utilizing Video Interview Tools
Phone and in-person interviews have been replaced with the video interview. These virtual interviews are highly interactive, allowing hiring managers to easily assess expressions, engagement, and body language from a safe distance.
2. Streamlining the Interview and Onboard Process
Open job slots will slow down business and allow goals to be missed. Time gaps between interviews may result in missing out on top talent who end up elsewhere. An efficient process lets everyone win.
3. Embracing Anti-discrimination Practices
It is unlawful to discriminate in hiring, firing, or promotion on the basis of color, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or national origin. Despite having laws on the books, businesses must be more proactive in protecting their workers.
4. Embodying Employee Rights
Many state and local governments are mandating paid sick leave and family leave during the outbreak. The virus has accelerated the implementation of these employee rights laws and policies. Candidates are seeking companies that are fair.
5. Engaging Thoughtfully with Talent
Building relationships is essential during the hiring process. The human element is imperative for making a good impression on potential candidates. Employers need to meaningfully convey company values and culture in order to attract and retain top talent.
Hiring has changed. In order to attract the best candidates, hiring managers need to stay on top of the changes.
