Congratulations on your new job! This is great news. To ensure a smooth transition, follow these nine steps before your first day as a new employee.
- Write an acceptance letter for the new job
In addition to a verbal acceptance, you should send written acceptance. Restate the final offer details and convey your appreciation and excitement. Keep a copy for your records.
- Write a resignation letter for the old job
It is very important to leave on a high note. This is not a time to air grievances. Keep it simple and emphasize the positive. A resignation letter can help you maintain a positive relationship with your old employer. You never know when you might need that old employer to give you a reference. Make your resignation letter professional, brief and positive.
- Thank your references and let them know where you landed
Your references are an important part of your network. Keep them updated on your career move and show your gratitude for serving as a positive reference with a well-crafted thank you email. Also, let them know you are there to help if they need anything.
- Thank anyone in your network who supported you through the process
Send out a quick email to everyone in your network who listened or provided advice while you were going through the job search. When your network contacts feel appreciated, you will be able to count on them for more help in the future.
- Take your resume off job boards
Now is the time to remove your resume from any job boards where you posted it. This will let recruiters and hiring managers know that you are no longer open to opportunities.
- Update your LinkedIn profile
Your LinkedIn profile is a real-time snapshot of your current work status. Here you should indicate that you left the old job and add your new title and employer. This will let your entire network keep up with your changes.
- Reach out to your new boss
Ask if there is anything you can do to help you hit the ground running on day one. Your new boss may assign some reading or research. This email exchange will set the stage for your entrance by showing your commitment and enthusiasm.
- Plan and practice your new commute
Do a dry run to see how long the commute takes at the time you will be going to work. You don’t want any surprises that first morning.
- Take a break
Enjoy some time off between jobs. Schedule some moments for relaxation so that you are refreshed and ready to jump into your new role.
Completing all these steps will ensure you get off to a smooth start at your new job. Congratulations on the new position. This is the opportunity you were waiting for; give it your best shot.
