4 Phrases to Make You Exceptionally Likable in a Video Job Interview

When the pandemic struck, virtual video interviews became the norm. While these interviews make it difficult to convey warmth and likability, there are a few phrases that you can add to your repertoire to make yourself instantly captivating.

  1. That is an important point. Let me write it down.
This phrase lets the interviewer know you are open-minded and curious. It is a way of telling the person that you like the way they think. It also explains why suddenly all that can be seen is the top of your head while you are doing the writing.
  2. Thanks for asking.
This moment of gratitude allows you to not only give an answer but also make the other person feel valued. While you should not say this phrase each time you are asked a question, use it sparingly to convey warmth and likability.
  3. Sorry for interrupting, I got excited. Please continue.
Because of internet speeds, delays, and freezing, you may find yourself talking over the interviewer.  When this happens, use this phrase to show your respect for what the interviewer is saying. Acknowledge what happened and step back. This shows you are gracious, understand video call etiquette, and that you are interested in what the other person is saying.
  4. I know I shouldn’t complain but I wish we were sitting together in your office right now.
Life right now is strange for some and bad for others. It is useful to acknowledge the reason for the video interview while also indicating that you are someone who appreciates in-person interviews but that you are adjusting to the new way of doing things.

Words hold tremendous power, especially now that the world moved to virtual video interviews where we can only see people from their shoulders up. Choose your words well and remember to use these four phrases.
